The climate here is characterized by cold winters and long hot summers. Characteristic of the soils are karst, limestone, clay-limestone and terre rosse.

Bassa Murgia is located south of Alta Murgia, extends over the provinces of Bari and Brindisi.

The area is red wine country, especially Primitivo, because it is at home here. The Greco grape variety is also cultivated.

The wines of the Protected Designation of Origin Primitivo Gioia del Colle DOC and the Protected Geographical Indication of Murgia IGT are recommended.
